Chapter 13

Jen

I end up missing my alarm on Monday morning. It’s the tossing and turning to blame. I just can’t seem to sleep when all my brain can do is obsess over Pakka. My itching desire for his body and the roller coaster of emotions I feel for him are a recipe for insomnia.

I managed to have fun on Sunday with my brothers. A swim in the ocean and a nap in the sun were just what the doctor ordered. Those three little shits had the sense not to say a word to me about Pakka, so I decided to let it slide that they gave him a hard time. Ultimately, I decided I would rather enjoy our time together than argue about a situation they can’t fully understand. When the time comes that Pakka and I know what will become of our relationship, then I can explain everything to them— whether it’s positive or negative.

But despite the relaxing beach day, when laying down in my bed, my thoughts of Pakka took over and tortured me well into the early morning hours.

Needless to say, I still stopped for some coffee before heading to the office regardless of the fact I was already running over an hour late when I left my house.

A little perk to being the boss is that I can get away with shit like that.

When I make it to my office area, I immediately notice the panicked look on my assistant’s face.

“What?” I snap, tucking my files under my arm. “I can’t be late occasionally? Might I remind you how many times— “

“Jen…” Hassan’s tone warns me that something else entirely is the problem. And that concerns me. Hassan usually stays cool considering all the craziness we’ve gone through over the past five years of working at this lab. But right now, his voice is sounding wobbly. “You might want to check your email. Like, now…”

I stop short in front of his desk.

“What happened?” I ask.

“The Kar’Kali secretly planned to replace their suppressor chips,” he informs me. “And Krile is pissed. Looks like he’s taking this as his big chance to cause a stink here.”

“The suppressor chips?” I repeat.

“Go read the email,” he urges me, waving his hand towards my office.

I quickly head for my door, my mind already racing. I sit down at my desk and open my inbox. Immediately, I can see the message that Hassan is referring to. It was sent by Krile this morning, and he has flagged it as an “urgent matter.”
